'briefly': on tumblr, Frozen, and 'community criticism'

therisingtithes:

Works that some of us simply enjoyed when we were young now pop with all-new levels of creative, symbolic, and ideological wonder after someone just nudges us, points at a random corner of the work, and says, “You do know what that is, right?”

I just think the insinuation that a work must be arguably metacritical to get lay critical attention is false.
People will cut it up all by themselves.
Tumblr does it for fun.

The idea that everyone needs to work frantically to meet people’s needs is just not true.

You just reduce work time. Everyone I’ve asked — I’ve asked a lot of people about this. Maybe not you guys, but most people, if I ask them, ‘Would you like an extra week of vacation?’ They raise their hands, 100% of the people. ‘Two weeks of vacation, or a four-day work week?’ Everyone will raise their hand. Most people like working, but they’d also like to have more time with their family or to do their own interests. So that would be one way to deal with the problem, is if you had a coordinated way to just reduce the work week. And then, if you had slightly less employment, you can adjust and people will still have jobs.

The title of the book about the show is not “’Community,’ An Interesting Journey into a Show No One Ever Watched.” The title of the book is obviously going to be, “Six Seasons and a Movie.” So it’s already over. Sometimes our hands are just tied up in fate.

I try to leave the plot mechanisms to the actual stories, because life throws stories at you — but it does not throw relationships at you. We manipulate ourselves and each other; that’s how relationships happen. We make decisions or fall into an attraction with somebody. I try to incorporate that passionate randomness into the stories that we break.
